Correction - college football in the SOUTH.

In the past two weeks I will have had the most amazing opportunity to attend very large football games at both of my parents' schools - Mississippi State (vs. Alabama on the 12th) and LSU (vs. Arkansas coming up on the 25th). As I was walking down University Drive in Starkville, Mississippi it truly dawned on me the incredible cohesive force, common language and powerful passion that is solely unique to college football.

It's not just the football - it's the tailgating traditions, the fight songs and the dedication. It's the entire experience. It's the cool, crisp fall breeze whipping through the rows of tents. It's the smells of the best food you'll taste in your life - and eat off a paper plate. The intermingling sounds of televisions playing other games, the bantering cheers, in Starkville - the clanging of cowbells, in Baton Rouge - the horns of the Golden Band from Tigerland. The overwhelming feeling of team and community.

It's family tradition (hence the homage to the Mannings above...). It's why you teach your children your college cheers as soon as they can speak. It's why you swear if they drew your blood it'd be your school's colors. It's why one of your baby's first outfits are the colors of your alma mater. It's a part of your soul here in the South. It's woven into your identity.

Every school may have their own scripts and their own uniquely crafted experiences - but at the end of the day, it's YOUR OWN. Each experience provides their students, alums, players and fans the unrivaled, inexplicable goosebumps. It's the Salute to the Stadium at LSU, Calling of the Hogs in Arkansas, The War Eagle flight at Auburn, The Aggie Bonfire, The Walk of Champions through the Grove in Oxford and so much more.

It's the common bond, the common thread and the indominable spirit and strength of college football - and so often all college athletics. It's so much more than the sport, the stats or the final score. Just ask the students at Penn State and Nebraska who solemnly met at midfield to show one another moral support after the week of chaos and scandal on the PSU campus. Just ask the women's basketball players and coaches from across the Big 12 who traveled to honor the two Oklahoma State coaches killed last week.

So - keep bleeding your school colors, screaming your chants, and honoring your school. Across the south - you understand. Football is more than a sport, more than an extracurricular activity for Saturdays - it's what you live for in the fall. It's moving. It's maddening. It's exhilirating. It's a religion.

Amen.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sarahwithasideofsports.blogspot.com/2011/11/football-heartbeat-of-south.html' title='Football. Please send my apologies to mister Orange Beach caller - I'm going to focus on it too.

If you're an NFL fan you're familiar with the segment C'MON MAN! Well, I've knocked the dust off the ole blog for my LSU College Football version of C'MON MAN!

Your team is ranked in the Top 5 pre-season. You have an entire senior season to finally prove to your nay-sayers that you are a legitimate talent and can lead your team. You have a huge, HUGE game against the Oregon Ducks (who just happened to play in the National Title game last season) at Cowboys Stadium the first game of the season. You are Jordan Jefferson. And, after the events the past few weeks. You are AN IDIOT.

I just simply do not understand what makes a senior in college - A SENIOR - want to break curfew and sneak out. C'MON MAN. You're 21/22 years old. You're supposedly a "grown man". You're supposedly a "leader" of one of the top level college football programs in the country. You're the main man, the director, the orchestrator of the offense.

Where was the voice of Les Miles in your head when you snuck out of the room after curfew? Where were the images of a potential championship when you went to the local bar? Did thoughts of your potential and your future cross your mind as you assaulted another human being?

Well, Mr. Jefferson, while you're sitting there with those shiny handcuffs around your wrists I hope you take time to contemplate all that you set fire to for a little night on the town.

I hope it was worth it - but guarantee you it wasn't.

C'MON MAN.

The Beauty and the Beast of the Cinderella

By now you've thrown away your bracket (if you didn't do it long ago with all of the "busting" that happened this year), paid all of your tournament debts, put the basketball shoes back in the closet, erased the Tivo and tried to look ahead to a hopefully worthwhile National Championship tonight with the ladies of Texas A&M and Notre Dame...

We had hopes last night for another rendition of the magical runs of Connecticut and Butler - but it seems that the clock struck midnight for both teams...

The game last night was like watching a depressing, tear-jerker movie like the ending of Beaches or Steel Magnolias in slow motion. It was painful, heart breaking, gut wrenching and NOT the fireworks, cherry on top of the sundae tournament finale we always hope for in sports. The shots attempted by Butler (and UConn, no less) looked like those flying around in a bad YMCA league basketball game of 5th grade girls. Bodies were flying, control was absent, finesse was fleeting and Tar Heels, Jayhawks, Wildcats, Panthers, Buckeyes sat at home with smoke coming out of their ears in rage...

During the game last night I had the good vs. evil situation pictured above going round and round in my head. Yes - we all live for the madness that is March. We thrive on the drama of upsets, the thrill of buzzer beaters and the role of the Cinderella... but in the end, is the champion crowned the TRUE, honest to goodness National Champion? Were these two teams truly the two best teams in NCAA basketball for 2011? NO! No, no, no, no, no! Would the BCS ever dream of awarding a 9-4 Mississippi State football team the National Championship? How about a 7-6 BYU? NO WAY - They'd be INSANE! There would be OUTRAGE! (Sorry Dad!)

Hate on it all you'd like, but the BCS system of college football has the power to take into consideration body of work, strength of schedule and wins and losses in the regular season to determine the layout of the bowl season and championship game and 95% of the time on right on target. This past year, Auburn and Oregon continually proved themselves and followed through and deserved the title shot.

How do we incorporate the adrenaline-packed excitement of the basketball tournament with the precision and exactness of the BCS to ensure the champion is deserving? Who knows? The debate continues...

A Proud TCU Horned Frog

Wow. Wow. Wow. Words TRULY cannot describe how I'm feeling this evening, but I'll try and do my best.

I realize now that I really never understood the true meaning of school pride until quite recently.

I grew up watching and cheering for both LSU and Mississippi State - so I always loved their colors and their school songs, their campuses and their football teams. Then, after signing with TCU in 2005 I wore my obligatory purple and white to all swim practices in college, and partook in all our sporting events always representing and cheering on the Horned Frogs. Then, I walked across the stage to receive my diploma on May 9, 2009 and it all changed...

I especially noticed my new found pride when decorating my office at the Houston West Chamber. TCU swimming collage on the shelf, TCU alumni sticker and TCU mug for the pens/pencils on my desk - and this Christmas even a TCU Santa Claus! I made my name in my email signature purple and found myself fielding calls and emails solely based upon encouraging my team - nothing at all work related! I became somewhat (as I coined it last night) the TCU Ambassador to West Houston! :)

I noticed with the implosion of one half of Amon Carter Stadium that as the pillars fell, I found a lump in my throat... I thought about the historical value of the stadium - both recent history and history of long ago. I thought about the ghosts of past TCU teams - as well as my own memories of running and jumping up the steps and bleachers during my time at school.

However, my pride really came to fruition the past month or so in the time leading up to the Rose Bowl. Those of you who know me understand that while I am incredibly passionate about sports, I generally like to maintain my calm, sweet demeanor and not try and stir up any trouble. Oops, that is until you disrespect my team - and therefore, disrespect me - because at TCU, you see, we MAKE IT PERSONAL.

I found myself wanting to literally spit blood out of MY eyes at certain individuals land-blasting TCU as pretenders who would be steamrolled on the big stage. I tried to keep my mouth shut (most of the time), but felt my blood boiling - knowing that those knocking our talent probably hadn't witnessed us play one single series of downs. I had faith and just waited for our players to hit the field today. I tried taking a lesson out of Gary Patterson's book on not worrying about what we cannot control and making our point out on the field.

Throughout the several hours of the game today - I paced, I screamed, I clapped, I closed my eyes, I plugged my ears, I fist pumped, I fist bumped then, when it was all said and done - I cried... The incredible emotions and pride flowing through my body just could not be contained. We had done it. We had climbed the mountain and proved that we belong. We no longer were the "little guys" - we were the 2011 Rose Bowl Champions.

Our coaches displayed poise and restraint (Patterson even halted the Gatorade bath until the clock had expired!), yet demanded and orchestrated 60 minutes of perfection. Our incredible quarterback commanded the game with a calm control and even quoted scripture in his post-game interview. It was just the classiest and most respectful display I'd ever seen.

Facebook was flooded with an incredible mass of cheers and pride for the Frogs and my phone flashed like a strobe light with those wishing the Frogs congratulations. People wanting to name their first child Tank (after our magnificent linebacker, Tank Carder), to others crying happy tears too to those continuing to poke fun at Gordon Gee for his riduclous mid-season/Non-AQ threatening comments! (PS - Hey Gordon, can you refresh me as to the Big 10's record today in bowl games?)

At the end of the day, we were the "Little Engine That Could." We thought we could, then we knew we could - then we DID. The TCU Nation painted Pasadena purple today - the first day of what is sure to be an incredible 2011. Brown Convention Center in Downtown Houston. While I wasn't using my astute selling skills in throwing off the shelves tshirts, mini footballs, mini helmets, lapel pins and more volunteering at the merchandise table - I had the chance to REALLY meet the stars of the show, as one man working with me so kindly put his $500 VIP admission badge around my neck and told me to go check things out. This is a "hodge podge" of those encounters....

The first two people I met that night... I didn't know who they were until they walked off! GOSH, what a horrible sports fan I am! First, a very tiny, firecracker of a man came up asking how much the books were that we were selling. Of course, in my due diligence I told him the price and explained that we would love to have him purchase one. He laughed and continued walking... then I realized... OH. MY GOSH. That was Rudy and he was asking about his own book. I am SUCH an idiot. HAHA! Nonetheless, he came back and signed all the copies and was very nice and goofy about his little trick.

Next, a petite little woman came up - the perfect picture of a Southern Belle - asking about all the prices of the items we were selling. She said she had 3 boys (pronounced with her accent... "3 boy-ees") and wanted to bring them home some goodies. She was straight up a brunette version of Sandra Bullock in the Blind Side - it was incredible! Needless to say, when she dropped $300+ without batting an eye I wanted to know who this woman was, then her husband walked up - none other than Dabo Swinney, the head coach of Clemson.

Finally, I made my way into the VIP Reception. The first autograph line I stopped in was Jake Kirkpatrick (of course!) - and I must say, he had the largest line of fans! He was chatting, taking pictures and so incredibly personable and friendly, in typical Horned Frog fashion :) When it was my turn I told him I was an alum from 2009 and I told him to beat up on the Badgers. He gave me a smile, a yes mam and of course a giant "GO FROGS!'

Next, I stumbled my way over to Nick Fairley. (Now, as a lifelong LSU fan, my impression of him may have been slightly skewed, but..... I'll continue) I guess he was too tired to stand up to greet his fans, so he was perched on a chair. He signed my program and I told him "Best of luck in the National Championship!" Now, I don't know if he just grunted or I got a "tanka" (thank you?). Hm, good thing it only takes a couple rocks in between the ears to hit people!

Then, this is where the evening hit a minor speed bump! I immediately spotted Gene Chizik and Dabo Swinney in the corner of the room, so I thought I could go over and get some autographs from them! I walked up and stood by their wives, one of them being my old friend from the merchandise table. I stood there for a while, not wanting to interrupt, but making my presence known. Mrs. Swinney remembered me and we talked for a minute. I told her that she reminded me of Sandra Bullock and she just LOVED me for that comment (SCORE!). She told me I was too sweet and to have a great evening. She offered to interrupt her husband (as most wives are skilled at doing), but they seemed pretty focused and I kindly declined her offer.

Now back to the coaches... of the two, only Chizik could see me - and he clearly made eye contact, but made no effort to stop the chat. He had quite the aura of arrogance, and he wasn't going to give me the time of day. If it had been Les Miles, he probably would have stopped and said HEY!, we would have shared a nice talk, maybe an appetizer of football field grass, then when we were done he would've said SEE YA! (One can only dream...) Oh well, no big deal!

After moving into the auditorium for the presentation - it revolved around the many mantras and philosophy of the award's namesake and sports icon - Vince Lombardi. A quote used over and over again - due to the award's affiliation with the American Cancer Soceity as well as football - was "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up." This sentiment, echoed by keynote speaker Rudy Ruettiger, finalist introducer Judge Ed Emmet and all of the coaches in attendance became the true central theme and really hammered home a lesson for me to take home. It was also reinforced the following night watching the ESPN College Football Awards hearing the stories of Arkansas' DJ Williams (CLICK HERE TO READ HIS STORY) and the recent struggles of Lee Corso (CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO).

Despite the celebrity perception and exposure of these players and coaches I had met or dream of meeting - at the end of the day, we're all just normal human beings. We all have struggles and challenges along the way - but must continue to persist and strive for greatness, on the football field or in life.

I'm so grateful for the experience last Wednesday and my unwavering love and raw passion for sports continues...

In the true spirit of Les Miles... HAVE A GREAT DAY :)

Movin' on East, Movin' on Up?

Well, after calls, emails, comments, questions and text messages from best friends, old friends, business colleagues, old professors and even the random guy in my building who always finds a way to creepily talk to me in hallway about TCU (STILL not knowing how he knows I went to school there...) asking me about TCU's move to the Big East - I figured this switch was blog-worthy.

Yesterday TCU announced at a press conference that on July 1, 2012 it will officially become a member of the Big East Conference. You've got it - the conference that everyone (TCU fans alike!) has moaned and groaned about that has an automatic bid this year to a BCS bowl game - sending an unwarranted UConn to a likely Orange Bowl.

Now, I think I should be beyond thrilled about this move, but I'm still wavering on how I feel. There is no doubt this will immediately mean dollar signs in the athletic programs, sky-rocketing TV time, more respect, improved recruiting leverage, the loss of the "Non-AQ" prefix before our name in all media outlets and the removal of the "little sisters of the poor" from our schedule. Right, Gordon Gee? (PS - I really cannot wait for your Buckeyes to meet another SEC team in New Orleans and get a good ole fashion Razorback & Ryan Mallet ripping- although I'd prefer a Bayou Bengal beat down... Oops, I digress) Moving on...

I kind of feel like the little kid that tastes a REALLY yummy candy for the first time, but then eats 500 of them - and realizes he or she feels sick. I understand the publicity and exposure will be wonderful for TCU, and I think academically we do fit the mold - but a part of me wonders how long the Big East will satisfy our desire to be included in the media as one of the big boys. It may suffice our appetite for now, but what happens when in 6-8 years when the Big 12 (or even the SEC... don't gasp!) seems like a better regional fit? Is this merely a stepping stone in the long process of developing an athletic program? Are we like the confused young 15 year old in high school that changes her wardrobe and hair color with the changing trend as she tries to experiment and figure out who she is? Hmm, yet the confusion and drama ensue.

Nonetheless, GO FROGS! I'm excited to see the future for my alma mater - as we're the classic underdog and small private school, a shining beacon of purple pride drowning in an overwhelming Texas sea of orange and maroon.... Onwards and upwards Frogs! Let's continue to show the state and nation that we belong and we're here to stay - no matter what conference!

Fear the SEC

What are all cool kids up to at 11:30 pm on a Saturday night in the fall? Watching college football ALL day, then blogging about it - DUH! Ha.

Nonetheless - what a day! I started out on the big comfy couch at about 9:00 am watching the GameDay crew on the Smurf Turf, and needless to say the TV is just now going off. Phew - I'm exhausted, but nonetheless wanted to recap this wild and wacky day of entertaining football!

I'm just going to go through a quick recap of the notable games played this evening and my TCU game last night (maybe not all of them on the national stage, but at least in my world...)

*Alabama/Arkansas - WOW! I knew this was going to be a tough match-up with the high octane offense of Ryan Mallett, and boy was I right! Arkansas came out fired up, but slowly but surely the tough, grind-it-out offense of Alabama got the job done. It's unbelievable how effective Ingram and Richardson are as a duel threat - especially in the wildcat and after contact. They can move the whole pack while they keep churning away. Truly exceptional talent.

*Ohio State/another no name school on their scheulde - Buckeyes roll... big surprise.

*Boise State/Oregon State - Ohhhhhhhhhh you Beavers just broke my heart. The amount of this game that I saw (after flipping between every ESPN channel offered - I think I have carpal tunnel now... geez!) it looked like a pretty chippy game, definitley no love lost between these programs. The Broncos won, but not in the landslide that the GameDay crew was predicting. If I remember correctly Lee Corso said two things about OSU's chances: slim and none. Hmm, think this may be a What Was I Thinking in next week's show. Boise is solid, don't get me wrong - I just want to see more I suppose.

*TCU/SMU - Yikes. We did win the game, but it was NOT the knockout punch we were looking for. We kicked their pretty little pony QB around, but still wasn't our best showing. Still not convinced we're the same powerhouse of 2009, but hopefully my Frogs can prove me wrong!

*Auburn/South Carolina - WOW. Two solid and up-in-coming SEC programs. I just love Coach Spurrier... a true legend in sports. Good win for Auburn - this was a dog fight, they both looked pretty impressive.

*Texas/UCLA - Okay, Texas. I've really been wanting you to do something great so I could write a really nice blog about you. I made a promise (you know who you are!) to someone a couple weekends ago that I'd try and be nice - but you just WON'T let me! Sorry for the loss... it sure was a rough day for the burnt orange...

*LSU/West Virginia - Another W for the Tigers, and another UGLY W for the Tigers. Incredible how a team with zero offense is 4-0. Bring back Jarrett Lee (aka - a QB with an IQ over 30 who can actually throw the ball)... PLEEEEEEEEASE! Oh yeah, and give the Heisman to Patrick Petersen, what an ATHLETE! He's my dark horse candidate for Heisman.

*Mississippi State/Georgia - What a proud day for the Dawgs (the dawgs in maroon, that is...) Beating Georgia for the first time in a decade! Way to go Dan Mullen! Keep your eyes on Starkville in the next few years, I like what the ole Florida offensive coordinator has got cookin' down there.

All in all - one thing STILL rings true. The SEC is by far, leaps and bounds, head and shoulders, miles and miles ahead of all other conferences in college football. They are physical, agile, and built with just a brute strength that cannot be matched. I still wish we could see more teams dabble in the SEC. Let's see an Ohio State vs. Arkansas, TCU vs. Auburn, Boise State vs. Florida, Texas vs. LSU! How do those sound (other than losses for the Big 10, MWC, WAC and Big 12)? Sorry, I do love my Frogs - I'm just not sure they could match up with the SEC.

Okay, I'm done for the evening. My eyes need a rest from staring at screens - they're tired! How about a right fielder who has a heads up play for the force out at 3rd base giggle around the outfield with his hands on his head not being able to control his excitement?

This is why I have just LOVED watching the Little League World Series - the pure, unbridled, unmasked emotional ride you get to experience with every change in the game - because it's written all over the player's faces.

These kids are just that - KIDS! I love the statistics - Height: 5'2" Weight: 96 pounds Favorite book: Mickey and Me. How precious are these little boys? They wear their emotions on their sleeve - they feel every emotional high and low all within five minutes of one another. They go from a pouty, fat bottom lip to doing the wackiest dance moves in the dugout when they have a great inning - it's wonderful! It embodies the true roller coaster, yet joyous ride of sports. They are learning the life lessons of handling success and defeat - all in front of our eyes, on national television no less.

Make sure you tune in TODAY at 3:00 pm as the boys from Pearland (suburb of Houston), Texas take on the boys from Hawaii! You bet I'll be watching and cheering on these new darlings of Houston, as will the whole city and state of Texas - MOVE OVER Yao Ming, Matt Schaub & company - there are new stars in town!

GO PEARLAND!

The BIG Picture

We're all guilty of it - getting ticked off, crying, or being down in the dumps when our favorite team loses in the last second of the game, when we don't swim close to our best time or when we lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game (okay... maybe that's just the picture above). We wear lucky t-shirts, lucky earrings, won't wash our socks and do other unthinkable superstitous acts so we ensure our team will win... but is it all worth it?
Now I'm going to momentarily get up on my soap box for a while in this entry... I've felt inspired to write this after a long talk with a really great long lost friend who recently lost his father. We both discussed how it's the BIG things in life that you should focus on, and all the little, insignificant matters that just seem to disappear...

This year has been so deeply eye-opening for me when it comes to perspective. Life is all about changes, peaks and valleys - and it's all been revealed (sometimes in harsh fashion) the past year or so. I've had some of my best friends lose parents and siblings - and known people whose lives were changed in one single moment. With the ever-changing power that is life - it's so important to focus on how you treat people EVERY SINGLE TIME you interact with them. You must put all your efforts towards being compassionate, loving and steadfast at every single moment. Is it worth yelling at someone when they don't text message you back in .2 seconds? No. Is that dirty towel on the floor really hurting anybody? No. Just BREATHE...

That being said - does it really matter when your beloved Houston Texans don't get that 1st down? Does the Fiesta Bowl defeat really seem as important? Does your time in the 500 freestyle from when you were 18 years old really mean ANYTHING in the scheme of things? The answer is simple - NOT IN THE LEAST.

Sports are a fantastic outlet, an incredible provider of lifelong lessons, and a wonderful support team but they do not define you. When your life is over does the person presiding at your funeral read your stat sheet from your athletic career? Not in a million years. What defines you is the way in which you live your life. The people you touch with your compassion and those whom you reach by your giving spirit. You're remembered by the way you loved and cared - not the way you threw touchdowns or hit homeruns.

Remember this... and it may make the last second losses, the interceptions, the upsets, the blown calls, and all of the other insignificant details a little easier to stomach.

Rapid Fire Rewind

Sound the alarm! I'm BAAAACK! With the clock ticking down to football season, I feel like I now have some passion behind my posts again! It's time to be back in business, folks.

To get started I'm going to quickly review the year in sports from the last time I posted (Ehhhh mind you it was Fall of 2009...) some of it you may not agree with what I have to say, but hey - you can't please 'em all.

1. NCAA Football -Alabama stomped Texas for the National Championship. PS - Texas did not lose because Colt McCoy got hurt (cough WIMP cough). Texas lost because Alabama was and is a better, more aggressive more physical team. They just flat got out-played. As always, I would just LOVE to see Texas play a mediocre SEC schedule (at best) - what a wake up call that would be.

2. NFL - The Saints won the Super Bowl in the MOST exciting, inspiring, energizing, FANTASTIC professional football game that I've seen in a long time. Between the images of Drew Brees with his ear-muff clad son, or the owner waving around his LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL umbrella - it was unbelivable. Talk about a feel good sports story (for once!) coming out of the NFL. Thank you, New Orleans.

Oh yeah - The NFL also lost a legend, class act, first rate QB in Kurt Warner. What a fantastic role model for children growing up in the sport. Hey, maybe he could even be a role model for Brett Favre (NOTE TO BRETT - Give it up already before you break your hip out there.... Oh, and make a decision - then actually MAKE it)

3. NBA - The Lakers won the NBA Championship. Yuck. Bryant? Over it. Gasol? SHAVE for crying outloud. Odom? You're more fun on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Jackson? Aren't you like 100 years old? Haven't you won like 38 championships? Retire already, dude.

LeBron James has a HUGE, RIDICULOUS, OUT OF CONTROL ego. I hope it fits in the franchise at Miami - yikes! He said he wanted to win championships with Wade and Bosh. Well, I have news for him - it's not going to happen. You have a successful team with a leader, support players, and those who fill VITAL non-on the court attributes. You don't have a successful team with three egos... and some other guys...

4. NCAA Baseball - On a more personal note, my Horned Frogs reached the College World Series for the first time and became the darlings of Omaha! Needless to say, after Matt Curry's grand slam - I was hoarse the next day. Wow, what an unbelievable moment in TCU history. I'm SO proud to be a Horned Frog - then, now and ALWAYS!

Oh and South Carolina won - good job Cocks... (heehee)

5. World Cup - Uhhhhhh.... they went to South Africa? There were loud annoying noises? There was an octopus that was really successful in picking the winners. Spain won. That's all I've got :) Needless to say, soccer ain't my thing!

6. MLB - The Astros are HORRIBLE TERRIBLE NO GOOD VERY BAD baseball team. End of story. That's where my baseball care stops - and it CRASHED AND BURNED this year with the Dis-Astros.

Well, folks - that's all I've got for now! I'm excited to be writing again, it feels good.

Let me know if I missed anything - I'll gladly give my 2 cents! :)

Until we meet again.... (and I promise it won't be August 2011!)

My Letter to the Houston Chronicle

I wanted to share with you the choice words I had this morning for Houston Chronicle journalist who had the most ridiculously awful article, totally disrespecting the Horned Frog's perfect season... Enjoy!

Mr. Justice,

As I sat down to eat my breakfast and read the Houston Chronicle this morning, I was sure I would stumble upon an article about the impressive weekend the football team from my alma mater, TCU, experienced this past weekend. Instead, what I stumbled upon was this: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/justice/6722430.html.

I'm sure this article was written to stroke the egos of the less than impressive Longhorns, and once again leave the Horned Frogs as the most overlooked and disrespected team in Texas. I sat in the stands Saturday night and soaked in the 50,000+ fans at Amon G. Carter stadium, and watched my team DISMANTLE the Utes of Utah. I must say, and I mean no disrespect, Mr. Justice- you have got this one terribly, terribly wrong.

TCU has beaten Clemson, BYU, Air Force and Utah- three of those four are ranked in the top 25 and three of those victories came on the road in very hostile environments. Texas has beaten Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Missouri. Last I checked- only ONE of these teams makes an appearance in the current AP Top 25. Texas plays a powder puff schedule- period, the end... Louisiana Monroe? UTEP? UCF? Hey Texas, why don't you play with the big boys, then you can say you deserve the chance. Don't skirt around facing tough opponents for games that merely enhance and inflate your statistics.

Just because we're a smaller private school, who only graduates 2,000/3,000 a year- rather than 30,000 does NOT translate into not deserving a chance. Neither money generated nor number of alumni equal athletic prowess. If that's what the system is based upon, then something has got to give. Keep touting Texas as this infallible power house, but I can't wait until they actually play a real team. Put them up against the likes of a Florida or Alabama, and I can't wait to see the beating they'll receive. Hey- put them up against a defense like ours, introduce them to Jerry Hughes, and I guarantee they wouldn't know what hit them.

Coach Patterson, keep up the impressive wins. The Horned Frog nation is charged and excited-the entire community that is TCU can continue to beam with pride... and our team can continue their talking... on the field.

THIS IS OUR TIME. GO FROGS!

Sarah Bardwell
TCU Class of 2009

To Play or Not to Play...

All of Gator nation held their breath as quarterback, Tim Tebow, lay motionless on the field after knocking into his own man's knee. As teammates tried to pull on his jersey, Tebow didn't flinch- prompting medical staff, and sending Urban Meyer, other coaches, players, and fans into an absolute panic. After presumably waking, Tim looked like a character straight out of Looney Tunes with the dust and question marks swirling around his head. Then... came the violent vomiting and disturbing exit in an ambulance.

The media has been sent into an absolute frenzy over this topic- conjuring controversy regarding the danger of the game, and the mental health risks it creates for the future. Lately, the main source of angst for the Gators has been the volatile "will he or won't he" regarding his play for Saturday's match-up with #4 SEC rival, LSU.

I believe I speak for most sane individuals by saying I believe there is absolute no need or reason for Tebow to risk his current or future mental capability or potential for one Saturday in college. In fact-- (Yes, I am an avid LSU Tiger, buuuuuut.....)-- I truly think the Gators should have the confidence that they could win this ESPN Game Day match-up without their starting quarterback.

Sure, they call him Superman, but we all know he's not invincible. Tebow has unmatched ability, strength, faith, leadership, and confidence, but there's no need to put his entire future in jeopardy for one W.

Hiring & Firing

The world wide of sports... it's exciting, passionate, diverse, dynamic, competitive, cutthroat, pressure packed, and much more. This goes for the fans, players, general managers, owners, athletic administration, and especially the coaches.

It seems that the legendary coaches and players are untouchable and can continue in their respective sport forever, but for some, the spotlight is short lived. One slip up, and there are question marks around your name. A few lost games, and your job is clearly in jeopardy. A losing season...you're gone! This may sound a little exaggerated and harsh, but I'm afraid it truly is the way things go.

In fact, teams are even releasing coaches after preseason games and in the middle of the season, not wasting any time allowing an unacceptable leader's position to linger deeper into despair. This year in the NFL three offensive coordinators (Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Buffalo Bills) were fired following a less than impressive preseason. Preseason? Aren't those games used for the purpose of tuning up, practicing, and perfecting before the real deal commences? Now they are more like an audition previewing the successes or failures of the coaches- YIKES!

Then there is the scenario of firing coaches mid season- the Phoenix Suns fired coach, Terry Porter, after four months at the head post. My hometown Houston Astros fired manager, Cecil Cooper, after a dismal few seasons- with another month or so left in the season. In my opinion, if there are individuals familiar with the personnel and the program, maybe holding lower positions, that can step right in without a hiccup- these releases are acceptable. If a coach is going to create more dissention and tension within a program than he or she is going to inspire and cultivate success- it's time for them to go...

The world of sports is a cruel one... judgements are passed quickly, and only the strong survive. It's a very simple, tough truth and thought that coaches with high profiles must live by- sink or swim.

Upset City… What does it mean?

Week 1- First week out of the gate, BYU upends #3 Oklahoma in Dallas

Week 2- Houston upsets #5 Oklahoma State on their own turf in Stillwater

Week 3- Sarkisian continues to work his magic as the Washington Huskies trump the #3 powerhouse USC Trojans

Week 4- #4 Ole Miss is upset by football legend, Steve Spurrier, and the Gamecocks, #5 Penn State loses for a second straight year to the Iowa Hawkeyes, #6 California is pummeled by the rebounding Oregon Ducks, #9 Miami is tripped up by ACC rival Virginia Tech

So… why in the world does it seem that the 2009 football season has produced so many notable upsets, and it’s only been four weeks? There must be something wacky going on! In fact… I believe there is… If you’ve been examining the top AP ranked teams in their games against legitimate opponents, their wins haven’t been huge landslides. Their have been monumental upsets, close games between teams you wouldn’t expect, and last minute miracle plays that have saved the necks and records of many.

What I think this means is that NCAA football this year is on more of a level playing field than maybe any other time in history. Of course, there are the top tier teams who will continue to recruit and build successful teams, but are they now light-years ahead of the pack as in previous years… now that’s up for debate. All around the country talented football players and coaches are developing and building successful, winning teams—despite the size, publicity, or history of their football program or conference. It seems that on any given weekend, almost any team can beat another, no questions asked.

Is a team ranked in the AP top ten a better or more worthy opponent than an unranked team? If you asked the Trojans, Cowboys, or Rebels- I’m sure they would warn others to never take an opponent for granted, regardless of past record, rank, or reputation.

Why America Loves Phil

As he stormed back into the picture with a final round of 65, Phil Mickelson captured the crown at the Tour Championship on Sunday, and continued to capture the hearts of America. He entered the round four shots out of the lead, and finished three shots ahead of the pack- we all cheered.

What is it about “Lefty” that makes him the constant underdog, though his FedEx ranking suggests otherwise? Maybe it was the string of runner-up finishes that seemed to act as a dark cloud following him from major to major, or the fact that Tiger Woods always seems to have the secret recipe for his defeat.

I believe we all want to root for Mickelson because we all see a little bit of ourselves, our family, and our neighbors in Phil. He seems like the guy next door you could baby-sit for, borrow some milk from, or just chat in the front yard. He doesn’t seem affected by his millions, nor has he basked in the bright lights of fame.

This past year has also added an element of humanity to Phil, as he’s struggled with the breast cancer diagnosis of both his wife and mother. It seems as if we can all relate, as countless individuals are affected by cancer day in and day out—whether you’re a world class golfer or not. We have cheered for Phil on and off the golf course, cheered for Amy, and cheered for the quick recovery of his mother.

What a great win for Phil this Sunday to mark the conclusion of an undeniably roller coaster year. Our hearts are continually sending our words of support and comfort, while our voices are persistently encouraging and rooting for the guy and golfer next door that everyone seems to love—Phil Mickelson.

A New Crib for the Cowboys

If anyone watched the opening game of the Cowboys Stadium, I’m sure you saw the lovely introduction piece to Jerry Jones’s money pit. The segment highlighted the Egyptian Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Roman Coliseum, the Parthenon, and other fascinating historical structures… ending with the unveiling of the new stadium. If you ask me, how grotesquely over the top!

The Egyptian Pyramids date back to before Christ—structures built to honor gods and leaders. The Taj Mahal, an Indian masterpiece honoring the life of an emperor’s wife, dates back to the 1600s. You get the idea… A football stadium honoring the pocket book of Jerry Jones and crazed, delusional Cowboys fans shouldn’t even be muttered in the same sentence as these fascinating, historical relics.

This $1.3 billion dollar monstrosity is completely despicable. Yes, it incorporates incredible opportunities of viewing the players through glass walkways. Yes, it has a 600-ton video board lingering above the field. Yes, it can fit over 100,000, but is this really necessary? Last time I checked, despite all the new technology, structures, and amenities- the Cowboys still lost the game.

Most Americans are struggling right now to pay bills, feed their families, and cover everyday living expenses. Does Jerry Jones really believe these average Americans will blow $159 for a single ticket, $75 for parking, and who knows how much on mediocre stadium snacks to help Jerry Jones pay for the outlandish architecture, video screens, and other outrageous features? I don’t think so.

Sports are about having passion for your team, and wanting them to score the touchdown, kick the field goal, and win the game. You want to love your team, love what they represent, love how they carry themselves and symbolize your community. You don’t just love them for their fat wallets. Sure, the stadium may have ignited attention and awe, but that’s not what the game is all about. Money can buy you pretty, shiny “things” but in the end they’re all worthless if you don’t have the human interest, excitement, class, and winning spirit of the players and fans behind the glitz and glamour.

Give 'em a Break

During last Saturday's UH vs. Texas Tech match-up on ESPN2, I heard an interesting fact about a hand full of the UH football players... The broadcasters were discussing the fact that a few weeks ago when the Cougars traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face the Cowboys it was many of the player's first time on an airplane. They joked about the players being frightened and apprehensive, not about their upcoming game, but merely their method of transportation. WOW- I couldn't believe it, this just amazed me.

With the constant media attention, hype, and pressure placed on college athletes, mostly football players, you forget that these boys range from 18-22 (unless it's BYU, then change that 22 to 25). They're still very young, maturing individuals who are treated like men, with the weight of the hopes and expectations of their team, school, alumni, and community resting on their shoulders. When they may not win every big game, it seems that the world crashes down solely on their heads.

One such player, who clearly felt the pressure, and fell victim to it, was Miami's QB, Jacory Harris. In fact, I almost devoted an entire post to profiling this prolific quarterback impressing the masses, but am sure glad I procrastinated! This sophomore has been so impressive, but I'm afraid the media coverage, exposure, and interviews depicting his winning attitude were a little premature, intimidating, and shook the nerves of young Harris in the Hurricanes beat down by the Virginia Tech Hokies.

I don't mean to sound like Oklahoma State football coach, Mike Gundy, but we should remember these football players are still very young, maturing boys, not men in the NFL. I remember the frightening, looming feelings when I knew a score was close, or understood the importance of a single race, and my sport of swimming didn't have a fraction of the publicity or pressure of football.

I wish the media and public would remember this before blasting hateful messages on websites and in newspapers, or putting the weight of the world on one individual player. Sure, the focus and scrutiny comes with the territory, but we all could use a little dose of understanding and cut them some slack when sometimes these boys, at a formative time in life, may not flawlessly meet all expectations.

Realizing Retirement

Justine Henin recently announced her plans to return to the game of tennis at the age of 27, following a year of “recharging the batteries.” Kim Clijsters left tennis to become a wife and mother, only to return to the game two years later and win the 2009 US Open. Quarterback Brett Favre retired, returned, retired, returned… well- you know the saga. Also, who can forget the roller coaster that was Michael Jordan- two retirements, two returns? Why can’t athletes, like business professionals, just make one retirement decision and stick with it?

Well, I believe I happen to know the answer to this one. For many, sports are to be enjoyed on the couch, sideline, or luxury box. For the lucky, sports are enjoyed on the field, court, ice, pool, or any other arena. For those lucky few, your sport is part of your DNA- it’s in your blood, it's part of who you are, it makes you tick, and you depend on your teammates and the feelings you get from your sport for your very survival.

Sure- sometimes returning to athletic competition after a break from rigorous training shows in lackluster performances, but sometimes talent can mask this time off. Unfortunately, though, sometimes all the talent in the world can help old age or waning ability.

However, sometimes a break is just what an athlete needs; time to get away from the stress of the day to day, a prolonged timeout-if you will. The break often reinvigorates the athlete’s desire, and reminds them what they truly love about the sport itself.

I believe if an athlete needs one more season, a few more tournaments, or whatever it may be to come to terms with being done with their sport- I completely understand. Sometimes age is just a number people use to label an athlete, but they still have the agility and ability to run with the best of them. Brett Favre, anyone? In two weeks he will celebrate his 40th birthday, and through two games this season he’s statistically the third ranked QB in the NFL in completions and yardage… not too shabby, I'd say!

In your opinion, are fickle, indecisive retirements understandable or irritating?

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Australian Ian Thorpe and Serbian Milorad Cavic… What do these two male swimmers have in common? Just ask Michael Phelps….

Ian Thorpe said Phelps had no shot at the 8 gold medals in Beijing. Cavic claimed he beat Phelps in the 100 fly at the Beijing Olympics and would beat him again at the World Championships in Rome. Notice the words in the previous sentence? They both said these things, but were they right or backed up… no way.

Phelps took these words and channeled them into fuel and fire that turned into gold medals across the board. He used the loose talk; posted the quotes on anything he could, and used them as inspiration for some of the greatest swimming performances of all time at the Olympic and World Championship level. In fact, he should probably send Thorpe and Cavic a thank you note for the little extra boost of motivation.

Tom Brady once said “Well done is always better than well said.” Oops- someone should have told that to University of Tennessee Head Coach, Lane Kiffin. In a press conference Kiffin ignited the Volunteer masses by boasting that he “couldn’t wait to sing [theme song] ‘Rocky Top’ all night long after beating the Florida Gators.” Well, Lane… better luck next time. Word to the wise… if you’re going up against the #1 team in the country in THEIR stadium, I wouldn’t be so bold.

However, there is one case where talking is warranted- when you can back it up. You know who did just that this weekend… the New York Jets. Behind rookie QB, Matt Sanchez, the vastly improved Jets took down the Super Bowl hopeful and legendary New England Patriots. This is a Jets team who had lost eight straight games at home to Tom Brady and company.

The Jets did take part in a lot of pre-game talking... A very risky thing to do. Coach Rex Ryan left pre-recorded voicemails to Jets faithful encouraging the fans to bring the noise on Sunday. Safety Kerry Rhodes stated he wanted to embarrass the Patriots and make them feel bad. A little harsh I do believe, but hey- they proved they were ready for this football game against the Patriots. Their proclamation of not being afraid certainly appeared through their performance, and a very impressive performance it was.

AP Poll Breakdown: Week 3

1. Florida: Garnered a win over Tennessee, but by fewer points than predicted. Definitely an outright #1, anchored by their crowned prince, Tim Tebow.
2. Texas: The Longhorns garnered their revenge against the Red Raiders, but most likely wanted a larger gap between the two scores, but hey- a win is a win.
3. Alabama: 53-7 win over North Texas… Congrats? They will have true tests in the upcoming weeks against Arkansas and Ole Miss.
4. Mississippi: A win against Southeastern Louisiana, another stop on the Rebel’s less than impressive SEC schedule.
5. Penn State
6. California
7. LSU: The first two weekends in October will introduce the Tigers to the meat of their SEC foes.
8. Boise State: If you’ve read my previous post… you know how I feel about this one. Needless to say, I was rooting hard for Fresno State on Friday! With BYU and Utah faltering, Boise is the last BCS buster in the way of the Horned Frogs!
9. Miami (FL): I’m very glad to see the eleven spot jump for the Hurricanes. Thursday night’s game was very impressive, especially infallible and prolific quarterback, Jacory Harris.
10. Oklahoma
11. Virginia Tech: Last second TD miracle saves the Hokies from being a 1-2 team…. At least they will be a 2-2 team after their showdown with Miami next weekend.
12. USC: Despite the warnings of Washington being a “trap game,” Carroll’s crew fell victim to the big victory hangover.
13. Ohio State
14. Cincinnati: A win over the Beavers of Oregon State let the Bearcats leapfrog (no pun intended) my TCU Horned Frogs in the rankings.
15. TCU: I’m still upset we have not jumped up in the rankings. I suppose we need a few more impressive games and opponents under our belts. Hopefully we can stay strong… unlike our other Mountain West counterparts.
16. Oklahoma State
17. Houston: They were idle and jumped four spots- What the heck?
18. Florida State: Unfortunately for their #19 neighbor, the Seminoles meant business in Provo.
19. Brigham Young: Poor, poor BYU… That was heart breaking… They didn’t even know what hit them.
20. Kansas
21. Georgia: Looks like Arkansas may be a lot tougher than advertised, just ask the Bulldogs- they barely survived.
22. North Carolina
23. Michigan: Keep it up, Rich Rod!
24. Washington: I tip my hat to Steve Sarkisian. For a team that went 0-12 last year, a 2-0 start is truly remarkable. QB Jake Locker has also done an amazing job for the Huskies.
25. Nebraska

As you can see, there's never a dull moment in the world of NCAA football. Were there any other games, surprises, defeats, or anything you found to be noteworthy?

Dad for a Day

We all remember what it was like to be a child- to be growing, learning, and developing into the person you are today. It's a carefree, yet formative time in life. Everything exciting, like Christmas morning, seems like it's the best day of your life while a sad, tragic event shakes you to no end. In a way, every little event seems magnified and intensified when you are young because you don't have a large number of experiences to rely on. You're constantly uneasy- looking for guidance, approval, role models, and individuals to lead you along your path.

That being said... there are some things children should not have to endure early in life, and one of them is the loss of a parent. On July 4th of this year Tyler (11) and Trenton (5) McNair lost one of their greatest role models- their father, Steve McNair, to a terrible tragedy.

Now, imagine what young Tyler and Trenton McNair must have felt as they knew the "Dear Dads Breakfast" was quickly approaching at their school. I'm sure they were uncertain, and knew they would be left out and ostracized due the absence of their father. In steps Tennessee Titans QB and long time friend of Steve McNair, Vince Young. Young surprised both Tyler and Trenton at school to act as their guardian for the "Dear Dads Breakfast." FOX Sports noted the reaction of relief and excitement of the McNair boys saying, "They were thrilled... the boys came to school with huge smiles on their faces." Young even brought Titans memorabilia and signed autographs for the children at the school. What a selfless and endearing act of true compassion. I guarantee McNair's sons will never forget that day as long as they both live.

This goes to show the power of a small gesture of empathy. Young even was quoted saying, "Those are my boys. I wouldn't say it was to pay anyone back; it was just out of love. Steve would do it for me. He pretty much did it for me when I was growing up. I have a history with the boys and I want to do anything I can. I am their big brother." Wow- truly touching.

In the loss of a parent it's crucial that children continue having guardians that care and mold them for the future, and it appears they will have those role models. It's so wonderful that the McNair children will continue to have the Titan community surrounding them to instill and ensure love and concern through this awful loss. A great way to add a positive touch to an otherwise very sad story.

The Team that Plays Together Stays Together

Everyone has heard the age old expression “The family that plays together stays together.” Well, I believe the same holds true for a family of athletes—a team. A team that can laugh with each other, relax and have a good time, always creates a more productive, thriving, and successful unit.

This past Saturday, College Game Day did a piece on how USC Head Coach, Pete Carroll, strives to create an atmosphere where his players are friends and enjoy the company of one another on and off the field. After all, within a team of friends, there is bound to be more teamwork, synergy, and a better athletic performance. See for yourself as the usually stoic USC Trojans let loose during a team meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T2QRpmjRmQ.

That’s the beauty of college athletics rather than professional. Granted, there are scholarships, but there isn’t all the talk of contracts, fame, signing bonuses, and who’s earning what—there’s no mention of money whatsoever—it’s all about the sport and the team. Coaches strive to foster a winning atmosphere by cultivating and creating friendships along the way.

My senior year at TCU, the Horned Frog swimming and diving team took a trip to West Texas to swim against UT-Permian Basin, practice in the fresh water spring at Balmorhea State Park, and camp overnight in the Davis Mountains. That weekend our team grew by leaps and bounds—we laughed for hours around a campfire roasting marshmallows, slept the night all piled next to each other giggling in our tents, and came back to school with stronger friendships with our teammates ready to take on our opponents together.

I wholeheartedly believe that a team who truly cares for one another through genuine friendships will perform at the elite level. When there are bonds of caring for one another you strive to perform at your peak for your teammates, and you desire for them to do the same—there are no limits for what you can do together as a true TEAM.

US Open 2009: A Wild Ride for the Women

The US Open this year could not have played out better if it had been actually scripted for television. There was a teenage firecracker, an emotionally charged threat, and a feel-good, heartwarming ending. It seems like a perfect story, right?

Unfortunately, I’ve found that the story receiving most attention from the tournament is the flared temper of Serena Williams following the calling of a foot fault at the conclusion of her semi-final match. I have heard both sides to this story—while all feel she was out of line, some say that emotion is all part of sport, while others argue her actions were completely unwarranted and unacceptable. Granted, all athletes feel surges of passion while competing, but it’s so important to keep those feelings and emotions in check, and to always exhibit calm composure. She was upset, but the situation could have, and should have been handled with a little more grace. Must we review what happened to Oregon football player LeGarrette Blount merely a week ago? Serena- you’re a role model to young tennis players and young people worldwide- you must lead by example, even if you disagree- disagree with class.

The most noteworthy story, which should be receiving the publicity, is of tournament winner, Kim Clijsters. A wild card, unranked, mother two years removed from the sport. If that’s not inspiring, I don’t know what is. This year’s US Open was only her third tournament back in the sport after returning to the sport haphazardly for an exhibition at Wimbledon. Slowly but surely, with quiet determination, she climbed back to the top. Now a wife and mother, Clijsters was able to maintain perspective, silence her nerves and add to her success by focusing on 18 month old daughter, Jada, rather than reviewing every miniscule detail of the game.

What a wonderful tournament the US Open evolved into this year. Some may shy away from watching the sport of tennis with its usual cast of characters and lack of drama, but those same people, I guarantee, tuned in to the this year’s tournament… and what a wild ride it was.

Weekend Bloopers: Mascots and Band Members

Just when you thought being in the band or a mascot wasn't a threatening job- take a look at these two videos from the weekend of college football! Two ties at the end of regulation. Two leagues. Two different sets of rules. The Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Tennessee Titans, and the Wisconsin Badgers vs. the Fresno State Bulldogs. One game won by the flip of a coin. One game won by a team physically triumphing over the other.

In an NFL overtime situation, it seems as if too much rests with the flip of a coin, not with equal opportunity on the field. On Thursday evening the Steelers won the coin toss, granting them first possession, eventually leading them to victory. This type of overtime system is typically called “Sudden Death” but I just don’t buy it. Whoever wins the silly flip of a token ultimately has the upper hand, how ridiculous! Often, a team may kick a distant field goal, and the game is decided. What an anti-climatic ending to what was most likely a thrilling game in regulation.
Yes, whoever scores first, wins- but if the game is a defensive showdown for fifteen minutes, the game could end in a tie. A tie? What an uninspiring, meaningless ending. A tie is the antithesis of sport.

In my opinion, the supreme of the two overtime systems lies with the NCAA. True, collegiate athletics strive to create equal opportunity, but that’s how it should be. Each team lines up at their opponent’s 25 yard line, if one scores first- the other must do so and vice versa until there is a clear cut, triumphant team. Equal chance, just as exciting, more pressure packed for the players, more nerve racking for the fans, and there is always an undisputed winner.

Why is it that the NFL does not use this system? It seems like the obviously superior of the two. The decision is not determined or given advantage from merely the flip of a coin, but by equal opportunity to score. It provides exhilaration, fairness, and always produces a single champion. In your opinion, which league provides the best method to decide a tie at the end of regulation- the NFL or NCAA?

The Best Ever?

Last night the Basketball Hall of Fame opened its doors to some of the most revered names in the sport— David Robinson, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan, and C. Vivian Stringer. However, the most notable name of the night was of legendary inductee, Michael Jordan. Jordan has countless accolades to his name including six NBA championships, five NBA MVP titles, fourteen All-Star appearances, two Olympic gold medals, and many others.

From these statistics it isn’t far fetched to believe that Michael Jordan is the best to have ever played the game. But... in a perfect world, don’t you wish you could see all the greats play against one another? Turn back the clocks and have each individual at the prime of their career to see what they could do against one another. That would be amazing…. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Hakeen Olajuwon, and of course—Michael Jordan. I would even love to throw in today’s greats like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaquille O’ Neal, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul.

Think of the competition, the games, the scoring, the defense— the whole package— if all the greats were placed on the same playing field and the same point in time. Wow...

If everyone were to be on the same playing field, would Jordan still be proclaimed as the best ever? I’m not so sure…

College Game Day Preview: USC @ Ohio State

The mighty men of Troy from #3 USC will travel to the home of the #8 Buckeyes this Saturday as the centerpiece of College Game Day. While this will be a much publicized and discussed game, I fear it won't live up to its excitement. True, these are two storied football programs, but they merely aren't an even match at this point in time.

The one leg Ohio State has to stand on is quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who will undoubtedly be tested on Saturday. While the Buckeyes do have experience at the QB position, USC must put their faith in true freshman, Matt Barkley. This trip to Columbus will be a huge test for the young starter, but I believe he will keep his composure and prevail. In fact, if Barkley gets a little rattled he has twelve returning starters to back him up.

What's my prediction? If the Buckeyes allowed the Midshipmen of Navy to rack up over 300 yards of offense, imagine what the prolific offense of the Trojans will do. I don't predict a blowout like last year's 35-3, but regardless, the Trojans will end up on top. Neither the fans at the Horseshoe, nor the dot of the "i" will be able to save the lackluster Buckeyes. Pete Carroll, the keeper of the highest winning percentage in college football will trump Jim Tressel and his... vest?

Final verdict: Lee Corso's headgear selection will definitely be in favor of the Trojans.

Final score... The question was, “In the past ten years how many ranked opponents has Boise State faced at home?” Answer: ONE (The Oregon team they were playing that very night). One ranked team at home in ten years? My goodness, show that to a team with the likes of any SEC, Big 12, Big 10, even Pac 10 school and they would find it laughable. Most of their teams must face at least three to four ranked teams per season.

So… why is it that every year Boise State sails through their push-over schedule, and slides right into the BCS picture? I think it’s downright ridiculous. Okay, they played and beat a very poor performing Oregon team, and now everyone automatically places them in talks for a BCS bid? Next up for the Broncos: Miami (Ohio), Fresno State, Bowling Green, UC Davis, Tulsa, Hawaii, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech, Idaho, Utah State, Nevada, then finally, New Mexico State.

Yes, they are a decently solid team, no doubt about that, but let’s see them step up the toughness of their out of conference schedule. Let’s see them play in the Big 10 or even the Mountain West, I guarantee they wouldn’t and couldn’t go 12-0.

What do you think?

Multi-Sport Athletes

As I watched Chad Jones (and his "dreadlocks of doom") play football for the LSU Tigers this weekend, I had a flashback to his stunning performance as a relief pitcher in Game 3 of the College World Series. Then, I saw Trindon Holliday returning kick-offs, and saw a clip of his NCAA winning performance in the 100 meter dash. In fact, many current athletes and those from the past made their mark by competing in multiple sports:

· Hakeem Olajuwon (soccer & basketball)
· John Elway (football & baseball)
· Michael Jordan (basketball & baseball)
· Marion Jones (track and field & basketball)
· Deion Sanders (football & baseball)
· Jared Mitchell, LSU (football & baseball)

I think it is truly remarkable if an athlete possesses so much talent and ability that they can excel in multiple arenas. In fact, it can even help develop and refine skills for their other sport. For example, a football and baseball multi-sport athlete gains strength and quickness from football, while acute mental ability is molded through baseball. Also, competing in two sports with off-setting seasons could keep an athlete in top shape, avoiding the off-season slump.

On the other hand, trying to compete in multiple sports could spread an athlete too thin, foster injury, and create fatigue. Trying to do too much could hurt the body’s development and health, slow the mental prowess, and lead to the end of an athlete’s career.

I believe if an athlete has the ability and talent to compete on several playing fields- more power to them. It's nothing short of amazing, unique, exceptional ability. What do you think… Does multi-sport competition help or hinder the progress and development of an athlete?

Lessons Learned

As I was driving home from Baton Rouge yesterday, ESPN Radio started a segment talking about what college football fans could take from the opening weekend. We all know our brains and eyes were over-used and exhausted from sitting in front of the TV for consecutive hours this weekend, but there’s really nothing better. Here are the lessons I learned from kick off weekend:

1. The Mountain West is indeed a force to be reckoned with. Just ask Okalahoma and Colorado…
2. Win or lose- Don’t taunt your opponent or you will get flat knocked out… and someone’s career will end.
3. Ole Miss did well, but Jevan Sneed wasn’t quite up to par with his hype.
4. Ohio State is once again, VASTLY overrated. They escaped by a thread against a scrappy Navy team.
5. Oklahoma State showed Georgia they mean business this season—a very impressive win.
6. Florida, Texas, and USC blew out their opponents, but let’s wait until they actually play a legitimate one.
7. No one team really looked like a stand out—everyone looked on somewhat the same level. Clear deviations and front-runners will likely develop as the season unfolds.
8. Alabama once again proved to Virginia Tech that they just can’t hang, no matter what they think.
9. LSU has some work to do when they return from their 2,000 mile trek. They won’t get by tough SEC opponents playing the way they did against Washington.

However, the most exciting game of the weekend was last night, as Miami survived a late drive by Florida State- winning 38-34. There was drama, excitement, a plethora of offense and defense- BOTH teams looked very tough. Oklahoma better watch out... they have Miami (at Miami) on October 3rd... I would hate for the Sooners to kick things off, and within the first month have 2 recorded losses...

What lessons did you learn this weekend?

Melanie Oudin: Heart of a Champion

Lance Armstrong once said "I think it's better we downplay our chances. The spunky 17 year old from Georgia has now upset #4 Elena Dementieva, #29 Maria Sharapova, and #13 Nadia Petrova to make a mark and pave her way into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. (Oh yeah... She's #70) Clearly, being the underdog doesn't seem to face this young competitor. In fact, it just might drive her to do more.

Melanie's success story is one of sheer determination and unshakable confidence. Oudin, who has competed with shoes marked with the word "BELIEVE" has done just that. After today's match Melanie said, "Today, there were no tears because I believed I can do it. Now I know I do belong here. This is what I want to do. I can compete with these girls no matter who I'm playing. I have a chance against anyone." She has showed competitors worldwide that rankings are merely a number, and that if you have the right mind-set and a heart full of poise and self-assurance- you're unstoppable.

Keep up the good work, Melanie. All athletes, and in fact, all humans, could use a little more of the courageous valor you have demonstrated over the past week.

"We talkin' about PRACTICE!"

In the wake of claims against Rich Rodriguez that state he forced an NCAA violating extra hours of practice against his players; it’s been raising eyebrows and raising questions. Speaking from experience, being a collegiate athlete is more than a hobby, more than a sport, it’s your job and responsibility to devote your time, effort, and energy towards being the best you can be for your university. Most of the time, you’re even being paid in the form of scholarship to do so.

While the NCAA rules and regulations do implement a 20-hour practice limit, I’m sure it is treated merely as a suggestion by collegiate coaches nationwide—regardless of sport. In fact, according to the Associated Press, “Football players in major college programs estimated they spent 44.8 hours per week on athletic activities.” These hours could be a combination of mandatory practice hours, voluntary film watching, time in the weight room, or any other type of activity devoted to improving their mental or physical sharpness.

Many collegiate football programs are so highly regarded that they somewhat resemble an NFL style program, with school on top of the athletic load. For instance, take schools such as Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, and others that generate millions, even billions, in revenue through their football program alone. That is a responsibility, a commitment, and a business—that is a job.

I understand limiting practice hours so students have time for their studies; it is a crucial and valid argument. Limits help ensure passing grades and maintaining healthy bodies and balance. But… these college athletes are adults who have a passion for perfection and victory, and must simultaneously accept responsibility for their studies and their athletics.

To the NCAA- your limits are vastly ignored, but coaches are not taking practice to the extreme. Let each coach determine their own practice schedule and demands, for the performance of their players and their team will be reflective of the time spent.

In your opinion, are these types of practice limitations best kept to developing young adults through high school athletics or should they be more obeyed by collegiate coaches? Does “over-practicing” really even exist at the college level?

For a good laugh (and in case you don't understand my title), watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frsId3goYYE

2009: The year of the Horned Frog?

September 12, @ Virginia
September 19, Texas State
September 26, @ Clemson
October 3, SMU
October 10, @ Air Force
October 17, Colorado State
October 24, @ BYU
October 31, UNLV
November 7, @ San Diego State
November 14, Utah
November 21, @ Wyoming
November 28, New Mexico

After an impressive, #7 finish in last year's AP ranking, TCU is thrilled, but still disappointed and hungry for more. What stood between TCU and a BCS berth... Do you remember? Ask any current or former TCU student and they will tell you (all the while moaning, groaning, with a sickening feeling in their stomach) the calamity of missed field goals against Utah in Salt Lake City. As Horned Frogs watched the ball constantly miss the uprights, it was a dagger through the hearts and hopes for a BCS bid.

Nonetheless, TCU is out for blood this year. They are returning from having the #1 defense in the country with a seasoned quarterback in Andy Dalton and an incredibly noteworthy defensive end, Jerry Hughes. In addition, 10 returning starters come back for the Horned Frogs- 6 on offense and 4 on defense. This season comes poised with an uphill battle, with two notably large away games- Virginia and Clemson. Excellent for exposure, but hopefully not too ambitious. Two critical MWC road games will come at Air Force (remember the 2007 game in Colorado Springs?) as well as at BYU. The showdown with the Cougars will prove to be key. However, nothing will be as noteworthy as the November 14 game on TCU's home turf. The Utah game will be an emotional one, with TCU looking for redemption, respect, and revenge.

Coach Patterson recently answered a few questions for me, noting his excitement to kick off the season to see what the Horned Frogs have this year. He's eager coming off the impressive #7 finish, yet understands the road to victory is never an easy one.

To brush up on the 2008 season and get energized for the return of Horned Frog football, check out this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8OuXa_xd0Y

GO FROGS!

The Fightin’ Tigers of 2009

September 5, @ Washington
September 12, Vanderbilt
September 19, UL-Lafayette
September 26, @ Mississippi State
October 3, @ Georgia
October 10, Florida
October 24, Auburn
October 31, Tulane
November 7, @ Alabama
November 14, Louisiana Tech
November 21, @ Ole Miss
November 28, Arkansas

If you’re a fan of college football you understand that nothing rivals the intensity, passion, exhilaration, and insanity of an LSU Tiger football fan. Tiger Stadium is somewhat of a mythical venue, something indescribable to those who have been, unimaginable to those who have not. What other stadium besides the famed Death Valley can register on the Richter scale as an actual earthquake following a touchdown? What other stadium can produce a deafening roar, or suffocating silence? Not even attending LSU, I still have those feelings of awe when it comes to their football program- there’s really nothing like it.

Tiger fans hope this year will be a rebound year, coming off a somewhat disappointing season marred by injury, interceptions, and heartbreak. The shining beacon of hope for the Tigers was the 38-3 rout of Georgia Tech in last year’s Chik-fil-A Bowl. The game was led by Jordan Jefferson, and the Tigers will look to him this year to step up and lead the offense. LSU also has Russell Shepard, Trindon Holliday, Charles Scott, Chad Jones, and dozens of other standout, talented boys.

The schedule is once again a tough road, full of stout SEC opponents and many challenging road games including those at Georgia, Alabama, and Ole Miss. They must watch out for a constantly improving Vanderbilt and Mississippi State programs, and take each match up and opponent as a serious threat (does anyone remember the game vs. Troy last year?). October 10 will undeniably be a fierce match up as Death Valley sets the scene for another potentially classic SEC match up.

The 2009 season will be an example of how LSU players respond to controversy and difficult times, but with the leadership, knowledge, and steady guidance of Les Miles, as well as the enthusiasm and steadfast nature of Tiger fans nationwide—this sets up to be a memorable year for the Tiger Nation.

To really feel the excitement for the Tigers season, check out the video below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EnePQm4KgM&feature=related

The Mountain West Conference... Did you notice your light-head, shortness of breath, burning lungs, and other effects? You were probably experiencing the effects of the altitude- the main element and central force in the Mountain West Conference (or at least for the poor teams at sea level).

According to online sources (and I know other athletes can agree), while at altitude attempting to take part in strenuous activity many things happen to the body:

Depth of respiration increases

Pressure in pulmonary arteries increases, forcing blood into portions of the lung not normally used

Dehydration

Dizziness

Below is a list of Mountain West schools and their respective elevations:
1. Wyoming, 7220 feet
2. Air Force, 6600 feet
3. Colorado State, 5200 feet
4. New Mexico, 5100 feet
5. BYU, 4660 feet
6. Utah, 4660 feet
7. UNLV, 2024 feet
8. TCU, 635 feet
9. SDSU, 441 feet

Schools even use their altitude training and prowess against their opponents, such as the picture below taken at the Air Force Academy pool...

So is the conference technically fair? Last time I checked Fort Worth, Texas was not mountainous or very far west, so why must all the TCU, and San Diego State for that matter, athletes be forced to torture at the hands of altitude? Regardless of which sport you may be competing in, there must be a certain recipe and synergy of characteristics that propel one individual past another. Today I want to examine the combination of two sets of qualities: brain vs. brawn and youth vs. maturity.

Brain vs. Brawn

We have all heard the mantra that any sport is 90% mental and 10% physical, and I both agree and disagree with the statement... I undoubtedly agree if applied to one individual alone, but disagree if the statement is applied to multiple individuals competing against one another.

For example, if Michael Phelps is swimming, focusing solely upon his swim, his mental capability, resilience, and determination will lead his body to the result he desires. If his mind is clear, relaxed, and focused- that will be the key to victory.

However, if Michael Phelps were to swim against, well, anyone in the world, his freakish physique and superior physical qualities (flexibility, wing span) will always triumph. His brawn and strength will ultimately win out, regardless of the mental stature of his competitor.

Youth vs. Maturity

If a NCAA football team is entering the new season with a true freshman quarterback, everyone holds their breath... but is it 100% of the time a negative? With youth comes exuberance, agility, excitement, and eagerness to prove oneself. Unfortunately, with youth comes shaky performances, inexperience, and nerves.

With maturity comes past experience handling 3rd and long situations, 4th quarter deficits, and opponent's stadiums holding 80,000 screaming fans. The mature athlete knows what to expect, but do they always have the secret to know how to endure and triumph over these situations?

What's the recipe for success?

So... what are the qualities that ensure an athlete will be elite? I believe there are countless qualities that truly combine to create the "perfect" athlete. They must have the mental strength, physical toughness and stature, a youthful excitement, a mature calmness, and much more.

What other components attribute to creating a world class athlete?

Houston Chronicle

The picture above is the front page of the College Football Preview in this morning's Houston Chronicle. They now join the likes of Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, and Gloria Estefan—and that’s just the one team. In fact, there are several celebrities with a stake in different professional organizations. They include:

Michael Jordan & Nelly, Charlotte Bobcats
Usher Raymond, Cleveland Cavaliers
Magic Johnson, Los Angeles Lakers
The Walt Disney Company, Anaheim Angels
Jimmy Buffet, Miami Dolphins (partner, NOT owner)
Jon Bon Jovi, Philadelphia Soul of the Arena League
Jay-Z, New Jersey Nets

What do you think of celebrities feeling the need to expose and emphasize their outrageous wealth by purchasing small portions of professional sports organizations?

I’m a mixed bag when it comes to this question…. On one hand, I believe individuals such as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson know the sport and could be legitimate owners, so it would be a positive relationship. In addition, the “celebrity” factor of bringing in non-sports figures could attract new demographics of viewers and could serve to foster endorsements. On the other hand, I feel that these corporations, performers, and athletes should stay in their respective industry and leave the sports teams be- you don’t see Kobe Bryant trying to purchase Def Jam Records, do you?

What do you think?

Where are the Role Models?

The most frequently used words in professional athletics:
Jail sentence, plea deal, probation, DUI, vehicular manslaughter, illegal possession of a weapon (and shooting yourself?), steroids, dog fighting, lies, scandal, greed…. even professional swimmers have been busted for public drug use! What happened to the wholesome athletes whom small children grew up idolizing and dreamed of becoming? The idyllic role models like Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Joe Montana, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan… where are the role models of today? I believe there are still some out there, but so often it’s the negative, not the positive, garnering all the attention.

I’d like to take the time to remove the likes of Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress, Roger Clemens, Pacman Jones, Dante Stallworth, Manny Ramirez, and even Mr. Fickle, Brett Favre. Let’s highlight those athletes out there representing the goodness of their sport through their dedication, persistence, and good works. It made me start thinking about some questions to consider for the 2009 NCAA Football season….

1. Should everyone wave the white flag and present the National Championship Trophy now or will Florida somehow stumble along the way? If you think they will be upset, by whom will that be?

While I do encourage giving everyone a fair shot and putting up a good fight, I think it is once again Florida’s year to reign supreme. They continue to have all the pieces of the puzzle, and barring any monumental failures should be a tough force to crack. Although, with college football you never know what type of upsets may happen on any given day...

2. Will there be a BCS buster? If so... who will it be?

You never know with this one—there’s always the possibility of Boise State appearance due to their less than impressive schedule. Also, as an alumna of the Mountain West, I would love to see TCU or Utah shake things up!

3. Is Notre Dame worthy of the #23 AP ranking after a rather dismal past few years?

This is going to have to be a wait and see type of scenario… They have some tough games—most notably, USC on October 17… While I do think Lou Holtz is completely out of his mind predicting the Irish to go to the National Championship, I’m interested to see what changes were made during the off season.

4. Will last year’s successful season for Utah and TCU bring more publicity and respect to the Mountain West Conference as a whole?

Initially both schools will be granted the attention and respect they deserve, but I’m afraid they will face the rarely televised and publicized dark that is the Mountain West. With its lackluster bowl opportunities and no outright BCS bids, it’s like trying to fight with one arm behind your back for the MWC.

5. Will Rich Rodriguez’s second year at Michigan revive the Wolverines and return them to greatness?

I have a feeling Michigan will not repeat their frustrating 3-9 record, but I don’t believe a 180 degree turnaround will happen with just one year. With games against the likes of Iowa, Penn State, and Ohio State it will be an uphill battle.

What are your thoughts?

College Football 2009: Quarterback Report

The time is inching closer and closer! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a sporting event wishing I could be standing on the sideline with the microphone or camera in my hand, wishing I could translate and express my love of the sports world. Maybe now I can take advantage of the opportunity to use this outlet to write about the people and passion behind the scores, times, and records.

If I sat down today to attempt to dissect and analyze the true meaning of the word “sport” I could be here all day. I do believe, though, that sports are a universal language. Everyone speaks the language of competition and sportsmanship. Athletes around the world know what it takes to train, and present a peak performance at the perfect time. They understand the emotion it takes to perform well, and they understand the emotional crushing after a heart breaking defeat.

Think about different moments in sport and more importantly, emotion, even if just from the past summer… The anguish and disappointment on the face of veteran Tom Watson after relinquishing the lead of British Open on the 18th, Usain Bolt’s devious smile and expression after running the fastest 100 and 200 meters in history with what seemed like ease, Michael Phelps snapping his LZR suit in defiance after downing loose talking Milorad Cavic, and Y.E. Yang’s exuberance as he lifted his bag in glory after slaying the previously untouchable Tiger Woods at the PGA Tournament. All of these moments stem from different types of emotion, different types of individuals, from different type of backgrounds—yet they have one common thread, it was done through their passion for the sport.

That’s what I want to highlight in my blog— I want to go beyond who won and lost, beyond yardage, points scored, and rankings. I also want to most importantly, have fun, entertain, and celebrate one of my greatest passions—the world of sports.

Next UP….
With college football season quickly approaching, that will be my first project to tackle! What you can look forward to include: games of the week, short snippets covering any and every sport, headgear predictions of the Game Day crew, as well as team, player, conference highlights, and much, much more! Hopefully I’ll see you again!
